Myopia Control For Families in Salmon Arm & Chase

What Is Myopia?

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common eye condition that affects your ability to see far away, making it difficult or dangerous to do things like drive or play sports. Myopia is so common that nearly 30% of all Canadians have it to some degree, and scientists believe that half the world’s population will have myopia by 2050.

Myopia occurs when your eye elongates over time. When this happens, light entering your eye focuses in front of the retina instead of on it, causing blurry vision.

Myopia may also increase the risk of retinal detachment or retinal damage in severe cases, causing permanent and irreversible vision loss.

Myopia in Children

Some studies have shown that myopia can develop in children as young as 6 to 8 years old. It is one of the most common childhood eye issues alongside amblyopia and strabismus. But we can help you manage your child’s symptoms through regular eye exams.

From an eye exam, we can help find the options your child may need to manage their symptoms. If you’re unsure if your child is struggling with myopia, there are some behaviours that may indicate they’re developing it, including:

  • Excessive eye rubbing
  • Constant blinking
  • Sitting close to presentations, screens, or lessons
  • Holding objects close to their eyes
  • Headaches

Controlling Your Myopia

Atropine Drops

Atropine eye drops are medicated drops that were initially developed to dilate pupils. However, optometrists around the world now use it as an effective method for controlling myopia.

Atropine helps inhibit accommodation, the process of changing focus between near and far distances, which could accelerate myopia development.

Multifocal contact lenses contain multiple prescriptions to provide clear vision at all distances. Multifocal contacts focus light entering your eyes on your retina, even in your peripheral vision, slowing the elongation process.
